Life at TImber Ridge School

Athletics & Recreation

Athletics at Timber Ridge School are an important part of our program. Our teams compete against public and private schools in football, basketball and wrestling. After their stay at Timber Ridge, many athletes return to their home communities and play on their respective high school teams. Some of our athletes have even continued playing at the collegiate level.

Our campus has a football and soccer field, baseball diamond, and two asphalt tennis courts. All of our fields and courts meet the requirements established by the Virginia High School League. We have been fortunate to welcome Ron McDole, former Washington Redskins player, to campus each year to present the Ron McDole Award to the school's outstanding football player.

Participation on our athletic teams teaches our students the value of physical fitness, following instructions and rules, teamwork, and cooperation. Our students have consistently received acclaim for their spirit and sportsmanship.

“Sports at Timber Ridge gave me a short-term goal to meet. I learned how to use small steps to help me reach my goals.” — Student
I encourage students to take advantage of everything Timber Ridge School has to offer. I went to school, played sports, and participated in other extra-curricular activities. It was the first step in making a good life for myself.
— Former Student

Exposure to positive recreational activities teaches our students how to use leisure time constructively. We have clubs across campus for students to find new interests that include art, crafts, music, and physical activities. Our location provides great opportunities for students to experience hiking, backpacking, fishing and cycling.

Timber Ridge School also has a chartered Boy Scout Troop for enrolled students. The values and lessons taught in Scouting are consistent with what we teach our boys. Students participate in Boy Scout events where they meet other youth with similar interests. When they return home, the students can continue Scouting with a local troop.

Timber Ridge School also has had a Youth Corps for years, which is supervised by staff who formerly served in the military. Students dress in military fatigue uniforms and learn how to march to military commands. These students have participated in a variety of community events including marching in local parades and providing assistance with parking at a local Civil War reenactment.
